Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic presidential contender, announced her departure from the Democratic Party on Tuesday, calling it a “elitist cabal.”

Gabbard, who will leave the House in 2021, slammed the institution in a roughly 30-minute video posted to her YouTube account. She did not, however, announce plans to join the Republican Party or any other political party.

“I can no longer remain in today’s Democratic Party that is now under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue & stoke anti-white racism,” Gabbard said in an excerpt posted to Twitter.

She went on to urge more moderate Democrats to follow her lead.

“I believe in a government that is of the people, by the people and for the people. Unfortunately, today’s Democratic Party does not. Instead, it stands for a government that is of, by and for the powerful elite,” she continued. “I’m calling on my fellow common sense, independent-minded Democrats to join me in leaving the Democratic Party.”

Gabbard has grown further distant from the Democratic establishment after her failed presidential primary bid in 2020. She has also become a loud critic of President Biden, accusing him of “pouring fuel on the flames” of the country’s divisiveness.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich applauded Tulsi for abandoning the Democrats in a Fox News comment on Tuesday. He claimed she is one of many Americans who used to vote blue but now find the Democrats unrecognisable.

“[Gabbard] has always been a bit of an outlier,” Gingrich added. “And I believe that when she ran for president, she learned how truly isolated she was from the vast bulk of the Democratic Party, which is now, frankly, a pretty strange party…. I believe you are noticing this shift. And we’ve clearly seen a significant shift toward the Republican Party among Latinos as a result of the Democratic Party’s stranger policies.”

She garnered a standing ovation in February for her speech criticising the “power elite” and “their co-conspirators in the mainstream media and the security state.”

In a perfect world, she said, “our leaders would take (former Director of National Intelligence) James Clapper before a judge to answer for his lying to Congress about how the agency collects information.”

‘And they would support the Durham probe and Clinton corruption in 2016…,’ she continued, barely finishing her sentence before loud applause erupted.

She chastised both Democrats and Republicans in Congress for “talking a fine game about civil liberties, but when it comes to voting on matters like getting rid of secret FISA courts and defending our fourth amendment rights to privacy, they vote on the side of the power elite and against liberty.”

Hillary Clinton notoriously indicated in 2019 that the Russians were ‘grooming’ Gabbard, but she did not use the congresswoman’s name.

Gabbard had resigned from her position at the Democratic National Committee three years prior to publicly support Sanders, who was running against Clinton, and told then-DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz in an email – which was exposed in the Wikileaks hack – that she believed the DNC was rigging the primary in favour of the more mainstream ex-secretary of state, senator, and first lady.

In April 2022, she clashed with Republican Senator Mitt Romney, who accused her of uttering ‘treasonous lies’ about the US sponsoring biolabs in Ukraine.

She issued a cease and desist letter to Romney, accusing him of making ‘false and defamatory remarks.’

Gabbard stated in a tweet that Ukraine has ’25 to 30 US-funded bio labs.’

‘These bio facilities, according to the US government, are performing research on deadly infections,’ she stated in the video. ‘These infections know no borders; if they are penetrated or compromised accidently or on purpose, they will soon spread over Europe, the United States, and the rest of the world, causing incalculable agony and death.’

‘These labs must be shut down immediately, and the germs they contain must be destroyed,’ Gabbard said.
