  • Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine in “Deadpool 3.”
  • The picture, which is expected to be rated R, will be released in theatres on September 6, 2024.

Hugh Jackman will join Ryan Reynolds in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with “Deadpool 3,” which will be released in theatres on September 6, 2024.

Reynolds, who played the “merc with a mouth” in a number of 20th Century Fox films, confirmed on social media that he and Jackman will team together for Deadpool’s debut appearance as a Disney property.

“Hey everyone, we’re extremely sad to have missed D23, but we’ve been working very hard on the next ‘Deadpool’ film for a good long while now,” Reynolds said in the video, seated on his couch. “I’ve had to really search my soul on this one. His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character, find new depth, motivation, meaning every Deadpool needs to stand out and stand apart. It’s been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down deep inside.”

“Hey, Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?” Reynolds asks as Jackman walks in the back of the shot.

“Yeah, sure Ryan,” Jackman replies.

Disney previously stated that Deadpool would be included into the MCU, but it was unknown when the character would receive a standalone feature or where he would fit in the larger scope of the Multiverse.

Deadpool is one of the comic book franchises acquired by Disney when it purchased 20th Century Fox in 2019. The X-Men and the Fantastic Four are also scheduled to appear in films in the coming years.

Reynold’s Deadpool films are a Hollywood rarity. Both “Deadpool” and “Deadpool 2” were rated R and grossed over $780 million worldwide. That’s most likely why Disney decided to allow “Deadpool 3” be classed R, despite the fact that the rest of the MCU’s filmography is rated PG-13 or below.

If Kevin Feige were to do an MCU musical, Deadpool 3 would be the obvious option. It’s a fourth-wall-breaking title that can kinda-sorta exist in the MCU timeline without causing havoc, and it allows Jackman to do his song-and-dance routines. I’m not sure if Reynolds can sing, but it doesn’t matter as long as it’s humorous.

Oh, and it’ll be released a month before Joker: Folie à Deux, a quasi-musical sequel to Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker starring Lady Gaga. I’m curious if the contract for Jackman includes a reboot of the Greatest Showman IP, but integrating Jackman into Deadpool 3 is the definition of an added value feature.

It gives those who are uninterested in a third Deadpool film a reason to care or be curious. Logan/Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, is a well-known character. For at least the last 15 years, Hollywood has been attempting to construct a road from obscure franchise actor to actual movie star with the likes of Sam Worthington, Taylor Kitsch, Henry Cavill, and Chris Hemsworth. Any involvement by Jackman in the MCU would be noteworthy.

His return to the role he defined for mainstream audiences will only add to the excitement of Deadpool 3. Because of the flexible continuity, Marvel can include Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in the MCU while eventually casting their own version when the time comes.
