Super Bowl 2023: Watch Rihanna’s full halftime show performance
To be in love with Rihanna, the musical superstar, millionaire beauty mogul, fashion designer, part-time actress, current mother of one and prospective mother of two, means to be left wanting. The next single, the next makeup release, the next look: Rihanna is one of the few persons in this overexposed, over-curated world who people can’t get enough of.
She showed us how easily — perhaps too easily — she commanded stardom during Super Bowl LVII, five years after her last live performance (the 2018 Grammys) and seven years after her last album (2016’s Anti), by virtue of how brilliant her prior songs have been.
“Bitch better have my money,” Rihanna said as she descended upon Arizona’s State Farm Stadium while levitating on a platform several weak-at-the-knees feet above the field, decked out in red with a matching crimson lip. The only billionaire in the world who could politely request more money is Rihanna. Rihanna doesn’t require more money, but she is supported by millions of admirers and receives whatever she wants.
For what it’s worth, the NFL is infamous for not paying its halftime entertainers, but it does pay for the production expenditures, which are consistently lavish. This year, numerous platforms were raised and lowered, lifted and lowered repeatedly in time with her set; the stage appeared like a massive sonic equaliser. Wide angles were used to capture the size and majesty of the floating stages, and the directing and camera work were excellent. Even though it was straightforward, the visual effect was enormous and matched the gravitational pull of Rihanna’s best hits.
Rihanna then eased into a mix of some of her most famous dance tracks after threatening money. The songs “Where Have You Been” and “Only Girl” flawlessly transitioned into “We Found Love.” Rihanna largely grooved along subtly, leaving the huffing and puffing to her dancers and the majority of the aesthetic work to the massive set pieces, even though these songs made up the club soundtrack of the previous two decades.
To be fair, following a rumoured social media flurry (that belly rub did mean something! ), Rihanna’s representatives announced she is expecting her second child. It’s also important to note that Rihanna has never made her name for herself by dancing nonstop. She creates hits; it’s all about the music. Any song in any genre can reach the top of the charts with the help of her voice. We dance as she sings. That is the process.
It was during the section where the speed dropped and she sashayed into “Rude Boy,” “Work,” and “Pour It Up” that the diva appeared to be having the most fun. She occasionally smiled sarcastically while the cameras were close by and occasionally squinted. a face-ography master. One of the dancers handed her what appeared to be a Fenty compact (internet sleuths realised it was her brand’s $34 blotting powder), and the beauty entrepreneur dusted her nose and undereyes as she switched to her last set of songs.
Now was Rihanna’s chance to shine.
After applying makeup, Rihanna performed “All of the Lights” and “Run This Town” solo before choosing to invite partners Jay-Z and Kanye West to the stage for what would have been classic Super Bowl cameos. Then, immediately after entering the stadium, she positioned herself on one of those life-threatening platforms and rose over the playing area while belting out “Umbrella” and “Diamonds,” two of her biggest singles. Both tracks feature that recognisable metallic shimmer in her voice, which is reminiscent of the taste and bounce of wonderfully chilled champagne. Rihanna’s voice has a unique tone that has allowed her to straddle various genres and produce so many outstanding songs.
