The documentary ‘God Forbid’ uncovers Trump’s shocking role in the Jerry Falwell Jr. sexscandal.

In new doc ‘God Forbid,’ Jerry Falwell Jr.’s ‘pool boy’ says he ‘felt like I was leading a double life’ before the sex scandal erupted.

Giancarlo Granda, a 20-year-old pool attendant at Miami’s prestigious Fontainebleau Hotel, had only met Jerry Falwell Jr., then-president of Liberty University, and his wife, Becki, a few months before. Granda had consented to enter into a relationship with the two, claiming that he and Becki would have intercourse while Jerry looked on, sometimes in person.

“As long as we recorded [the sex], he was OK with it,” Granda explained. “A lot of pressure came from Jerry Falwell Jr. Basically, her job was to seduce me and successfully have sex with me. And if she wasn’t able to do that, Jerry would get upset.”

Suddenly, Granda broke it off. It wouldn’t be the last time.

“I told Becki, we can’t have sex because I found a girl my age. I want to date her. I like her a lot. We obviously can’t keep doing this,” Granda recalls in Hulu’s new documentary God Forbid: The Sex Scandal That Brought Down a Dynasty, which debuted Tuesday. “She didn’t take it very well. Becki cried, she made me feel guilty for it…. She would tell me, ‘God put us together.'”

So Jerry stepped in. Granda initially mistook him for a friendly hotel guest, but his older sister informed him that he was the president of one of the country’s most conservative institutions. Jerry Falwell’s power impressed Granda. Nonetheless, he eventually want to be able to date women his own age rather than women more than twice his age.

“Jerry said, ‘Well, [Becki] doesn’t have to know. We won’t tell her,'” Granda said. “And I said, ‘No, I’m sorry, I can’t. I don’t feel comfortable doing it.’ What I did agree to, and it’s not, it’s not right, I continued the emotional connection. I kept texting her, I kept talking to her every day. I felt like I was living a double life.”

Becki, according to Granda, continued to phone and text him on a daily basis and submitted numerous of their alleged communications to the filmmakers.

Jerry and Becki, for their part, have maintained that Granda only had a relationship with Becki; they claim it was far shorter than his and that Granda eventually tried to extort them over it. Neither is included in the documentary.

Granda threatened to phone him crying if he didn’t answer to Becki right away.

“If I didn’t respond for a couple days, then Jerry would call me. He was disappointed. He’d say, ‘Hey, what’s going on? Like, she loves you so much. Why are you trying to break away? She’s been so nice to you. And we’re going to bat for you for this property. Why break up now?'”

He claimed in the documentary and in his new book, Off the Deep End: Jerry and Becki Falwell and the Collapse of an Evangelical Dynasty, that the three’s relationship shifted from a friendly one in which they assisted him in making business connections and even went into business with him, to one in which they felt they were attempting to control him.

Granda reported receiving a “graphic SMS” from Becki, who stated that she was viewing a video of them having sex. Granda claimed he had no idea they were being taped.

“I felt like it was a subtle hint as to, you know, ‘We got the goods on you too. Like, don’t forget that,'” he said.

When Falwell introduced him to his renowned friend Donald Trump, who was starring on The Apprentice, the budding real estate developer was overjoyed. Granda was a devotee of Trump’s book The Art of the Deal, and he even signed it during the meeting; it emphasised for him that he needed to continue with the Falwells in order to be successful.

Granda claimed he instantly felt bad after learning that students at Liberty University, founded by Falwell’s father, are bound by a stringent moral code. He was aware that the Falwells were not behaving in the same manner. The scenario was accompanied by a great deal of personal turmoil.

“The lies just started building up. I had to lie to my girlfriends. I had to lie to my family. It was exhausting,” Granda said. “If you look at the Falwells, they were living their best life. They were professionals at living a double life.”

Director Billy Corben, best known for his work on Cocaine Cowboys, dives into the significance of Falwell’s backing of Trump in electing his friend president a few years later, which Granda says is one of the reasons he decided to come forward.

He had eventually abandoned his partnership with the Falwells after Jerry allegedly failed to deliver on his promises. Granda felt the Falwells had something to do with the rescinding of a job offer.

When a reporter asked Granda about his friendship with the Falwells, he decided to speak up. In the film, he was certain of his decision.

“It feels like right now, this is happening for a reason. Me confessing to the world what happened will somehow stop one of Trump’s closest allies, which is Jerry Falwell Jr.,” Granda said. “I felt like I had a responsibility.”

However, it was also personal.

In the end, Granda texted Jerry, “The worst thing that ever happened to me was meeting you and Becki. Now everyone is falling for me.”

Falwell was already embroiled in a number of problems when Reuters published the Granda controversy in August 2020, with an interview with the other man himself. He quit from Liberty, reportedly pocketing $10.5 million.
