TikTok US Ban Soon: Congress Now Approaching A Consensus

TikTok, a short-form video application, is one of the most popular online platforms in the world today, with a high number of users in the United States. The majority of the app’s users are teens, and the app has been a topic of discussion for quite some time.

Many nations, including India, Bangladesh, and Indonesia, have banned the service, citing grounds such as the inclusion of objectionable information and a threat to national security. In contrast, the app is extremely popular among the youthful generation in the United States.

The application has also received a lot of flak in the United States. Some states in the United States have taken steps to prohibit the app.

According to published reports, the United States House of Representatives has now enacted legislation requiring the removal of applications from government-owned devices.

TikTok is a product of Bytedance, its parent company. Because of its tight ties with China, the corporation is heavily attacked in the United States.

It is clear that China has a large influence on the corporation ByteDance, which is one of the main reasons why the software is not considered as favourable by most US states and has already been banned.

Nebraska was one among the first states to prohibit TikTok use on government-issued smartphones in 2020. Following the restriction, states such as Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Maryland, Oklahoma, Dakota, Texas, Utah, and others have prohibited the use of TikTok on state government equipment.

Because the application was developed by ByteDance, a Chinese corporation, the US government is wary of the information obtained by it.

Because the software requires several permissions, such as location, the corporation will have relatively easy access to such sensitive information of many US residents.

The software can also be used to research the tastes and nature of Americans, which is extremely sensitive information if it enters into the hands of an enemy government.

One such occasion occurred earlier this month.

According to sources, ByteDance, TikTok’s parent firm, performed an internal inquiry and discovered that their workers exploited the information available through TikTok to obtain data on journalists who work for agencies such as BuzzFeed, Financial Times, and Forbes.

Employees used the journalist’s IP address and tracked the journalist’s movements to determine the source of their coverage.

ByteDance claimed to have fired four of their workers involved in the scam and stated that the data regarding US usage is not stored in China.

ByteDance responded to the arguments by stating that the company has no ties to the Chinese government and that they are much more focused on their offices in Los Angeles, Singapore, and Washington D.C. to demonstrate that the company’s operations are mostly centred outside of China.

The company’s response was not totally accepted by the US government, and the government conducted an investigation into the matter while Donald Trump was president.

When Donald Trump was president of the United States, the movement against banning the short-video app gathered traction.

According to reports, Trump signed an official order banning the app throughout the country. However, the order was tacked on by federal judges, who issued an injunction against the orders, claiming that they were founded on weak legal reasons.

He attempted to remove the software from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store unless the company was sold to an American company, but this did not occur. When Trump left the White House, the problem remained unresolved.

According to the most recent information available, the Senate enacted the law that will ensure the suspension of TikTok-owned apps earlier this month. It is expected to be signed by President Joe Biden, making it a law that all states must follow.

The restriction has already been implemented by departments with significant responsibilities for national security, such as Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, and the State Department. Not only that, but as of December 13, about 13 states in the country had banned the app.

TikTok’s popularity has risen in recent years, and the app is now one of the most popular in the country.

TikTok is estimated to have 90 million users in the United States, with teens being the most active users.

The app’s permanent ban in the country is expected to have a significant impact on its teenage users.
