Rihanna released the first of her two songs for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ahead of the film’s full soundtrack release, bringing the Barbadian singer’s protracted absence to an end.

Rihanna and Marvel Studios teased the music earlier this week, with the singer attending the red carpet premiere of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in what has fast become the newest development in her career following news of her anticipated presence as Super Bowl LVII’s main act. The early trailers for Wakanda Forever featured a cover of Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry” by Nigerian artist Tems, as well as Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright,” with the rapper being a logical fit after playing significantly on the soundtrack of the original Black Panther film.

Rihanna’s first contribution is named “Lift Me Up,” and it’s her first song in six years since the release of her last album, 2016’s Anti, but with the approaching release of a second song for Wakanda Forever, her fans will be happy. This lead song will be included in the official soundtrack album for the film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Music From and Inspired By, which will be released on November 4 by Roc Nation Records/Def Jam Recordings/Hollywood Records. It’s simply best to give the song a fair listen.

Director Ryan Coogler commended Rihanna’s song for his picture, saying it’s a fantastic fit, especially since the singer gave birth to her and A$AP Rocky’s first child this year, as the topic of motherhood is so crucial in Wakanda Forever. The soundtrack CD for the film was produced by Ryan Coogler, Ludwig Göransson, Archie Davis, and Dave Jordan, with Göransson’s companion Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Original Score being released on the same day the film is released worldwide.

Early impressions of Wakanda Forever have revealed that Rihanna’s two songs will be played before the film’s credits begin to roll, with only one mid-credits scene for MCU die-hards, and “Lift Me Up” sounds like the ideal finish. Both Kendrick Lamar’s selected album and Göransson’s score were universally hailed by fans and music professionals, with the Swedish composer getting multiple awards for his work and landing work on Creed 2, Tenet, Oppenheimer, and The Mandalorian.

It’s difficult to argue that Rihanna’s song doesn’t contribute to the overall emotional weight of a film like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but for many, it’s the ideal vehicle for her to re-enter the spotlight and add even more remarkable accolades to her nearly 20-year music career.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will release in theaters on November 11, 2022.
