Police in London have arrested a 17-year-old hacker suspected of Uber and GTA 6 leaks.
The British NCCU apprehended a 17-year-old kid on the evening of September 22. He is suspected of being the well-known hacker who broke the Uber system and exposed enormous amounts of content from the yet-to-be-announced GTA 6. This was not only the biggest leak in GTA history, but also in the history of the game industry. Lapsus$, a hacker group, is responsible for everything.
“On the evening of Thursday 22 September 2022, the City of London Police arrested a 17-year-old in Oxfordshire on suspicion of hacking,” the agency said, adding “he remains in police custody.”
The department said the arrest was made as part of an investigation in partnership with the U.K. National Crime Agency’s cyber crime unit.
The subject of the inquiry was not divulged, although it is thought that the law enforcement operation is related to the recent wave of high-profile cyberattacks aimed at Uber and Rockstar Games.
Both incursions are said to have been perpetrated by the same threat actor, known as Tea Pot (aka teapotuberhacker).
Uber, for its part, has blamed the hack on an attacker (or attackers) linked to the LAPSUS$ extortion ring, two of whom are facing fraud charges.
According to cybersecurity firm Flashpoint, the real-world identify of the hacker responsible for the two instances was revealed on an online criminal forum.
“The administrator for that forum claimed that teapotuberhacker was the same individual who had allegedly hacked Microsoft and ‘owned’ Doxbin,” the company disclosed Friday.
This also implies that the teapotuberhacker actor is most likely the same person that goes by the identities White, Breachbase, and WhiteDoxbin and is thought to be “LAPSUS$’s apparent ringleader.”
It’s unclear whether these allegations are accurate, but if true, they could explain the newest law enforcement arrest.
LAPSUS$ HACKING GROUP LEADERS ARE IN JAIL
The hacker organisation Lapsus$ obtained NVIDIA’s 1TB data in March 2022. Following that, it proposed that GPU drivers for Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms become fully open source by the end of March 4. If not, they threatened to make the information public.
Lapsus$ targeted Samsung the same month (again). The hacking group shared 190GB of stolen partial source code from Samsung servers.
In general, March was a highly fruitful month for Lapsus$. In addition to the aforementioned intrusions, Microsoft revealed that this hacker gang had achieved limited access to the company’s systems. Lapsus$ previously claimed to have successfully hacked into Microsoft’s networks and got source code for the voice assistants Bing and Cortana.
Simultaneously, Apple Insider revealed that the Apple Health source code used to create the Globant “Earn Your Apple Watch” initiative may have been stolen. This was the work of Lapsus$.
Previously, Uber stated that it was in communication with the FBI and the US Department of Justice. Though Rockstar has not published a comparable statement, there is every reason to believe that it was also collaborating with the FBI.
As a reminder, GTA 6 will be released in two years. As a result, this adolescent could divulge several secrets ahead of the launch.
The UK’s National Cyber Crime Unit has “declined to comment” on the matter and the City of London police did not elaborate on the arrest beyond the above social media post.
Xbox’s Sarah Bond last week shared a message with Rockstar in response to the leaks – stating how her thoughts were with the team, and mentioning how she couldn’t wait for the official reve
