Margot Robbie made her debut appearance in a promo for the next Barbie film, where she was acting. Will Ferrell, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, and Michael Cera star alongside Ryan Gosling as Ken.
The teaser begins with Helen Mirren’s voice saying, “Since the beginning of time, since the first young girl ever existed, there have been… dolls. The dolls, on the other hand, were always and forever baby dolls. Until…” The music from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 A Space Odyssey soundtrack brings in the entry of the enormous doll, Barbie, who is clearly not a baby.
This new doll looks beautiful in a black-and-white striped swimsuit and black high heels. Margot lowers her white sunglasses and offers the camera a sly wink.
The Suicide Squad actress plays the controversial doll, which was first released in 1959, in a film directed by Little Women screenwriter Greta and based on a novel she co-wrote with famed writer Noah. Mistress America and Frances Ha were both ada..
“A terrific reflection on male power and women in society,” according to Ferrell, who plays Mattel’s CEO in the film. Later, Anne Hathaway was slated to appear, but Robbie begged Gerwig to replace her.
“People immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,’ but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different – the thing you didn’t know you wanted,’ Robbie said to the Hollywood Reporter. She added that she hoped the film will “provoke a thoughtful conversation”.
Barbie was first conceived in 2015 by Oscar-winning Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody, before being passed on to Amy Schumer in 2016 to act and co-write. “They clearly didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it,” she stated later.
It was initially planned to star Anne Hathaway before being given to Robbie, who begged Gerwig to be a part of it.
Following the release of this film, Mattel will reveal another Polly Pocket adaptation, directed by Lena Dunham and starring Lily Collins. Dunham stated in October that she was working on furthering the development of the screenplay. Mattel is also responsible for the films Masters of the Universe and Hot Wheels.
Gerwig made her directorial debut with Lady Bird, which received five Academy Award nominations. She will direct a remake of the film Little Women in 2019.
In May, Simu Li, an actor and member of the cast, told GQ UK that a young rep from his agency declared Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s movie script is one of the greatest he has ever seen. “He literally said this verbatim. ‘If I could put my career on one script, it would be the Barbie script,’ he said. “I believe you should do it.” Liu said.
Liu later remarked that the film was “crazy” and “very distinctive.” “I wish I could just show you what we do on a daily basis because it’s crazy,” he remarked.
This month marks the release of Robbie’s most recent film, Babylon, in which he co-stars with Brad Pitt. She will star in Wes Anderson’s upcoming film, Asteroid City, alongside Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, and Tilda Swinton, among others. It has been agreed that the Barbie film will be released in July 2023.
