Amazon stated today that it has reached an agreement with Games Workshop (GAW) to acquire the intellectual property rights to the “Warhammer 40,000” world, a tremendously popular tabletop miniature wargame. According to Amazon, this is the first deal of its sort.

In “Warhammer 40,000,” humanity is besieged by aliens and supernatural beings in the far future. The game, which was launched approximately 40 years ago, is constantly evolving, and GAW contains many miniature figures, tabletop games, video games, cartoons, and novels.

The arrangement allows Amazon to deliver films and television series, as well as other content based on the IP. This is a significant step for the firm because the “Warhammer 40,000” universe is epic in scale and has a vast global fanbase.

“Warhammer 40,000 has caught the imagination of fans of all ages, from all walks of life, and from all across the world,” said Jennifer Salke, president of Amazon and MGM Studios.

Henry Cavill, star of “Man of Steel” and “The Witcher,” is going to star in and executive produce the “Warhammer 40,000” franchise. Knowing that Cavill would be involved in the new “Warhammer 40,000” content will undoubtedly be comforting to some, as he is a die-hard “Warhammer” fan.

“For 30 years, I have dreamed of seeing a Warhammer universe in live action,” Cavill posted on Instagram. After 22 years in this field, I now feel that I have the skill set and expertise to bring a Warhammer Cinematic Universe to life…

Having a home like Amazon will allow us to stay faithful to Warhammer’s vast breadth. To all of those Warhammer lovers out there, I guarantee to uphold this beloved IP. And I’m attempting to bring you something great that has yet to be seen.”

Along with Cavill, Vertigo Entertainment, Amazon Studios and GAW’s global head of marketing and media, Andy Smillie, and global IP and product design director, Max Bottrill, will executive produce.

It’s worth noting that Cavill’s comeback as Superman was recently confirmed. Fans have been upset all week, with nearly 4,000 people signing petitions pleading for his return. Cavill is also quitting Netflix’s “The Witcher” after three seasons, handing over the role of Geralt of Rivia to “The Hunger Games” star Liam Hemsworth.

Agreement in principle to develop film and TV

Games Workshop is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement in principle with Amazon Content Services LLC, a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc., (“Amazon”) for Amazon to develop Games Workshop’s intellectual property into film and television productions and for Games Workshop to grant Amazon associated merchandising rights.

In advance of contracts being entered into, Amazon will be commencing certain development activities (such as holding preliminary discussions with writers) in order to facilitate the project. It is intended that rights will initially be granted to develop the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

Whilst the parties have reached agreement on material commercial terms, the project is wholly dependent on and subject to contracts being agreed and entered into, which the parties are working towards.

The Company makes no change to its forecast for the period ended May 2023.

A further announcement will be made in due course.

Henry Cavill’s Reappearance

Henry Cavill will appear in and executive produce the adaptation, which he described a “nigh-on lifelong dream come true”.

The game’s creator, Games Workshop, announced on Friday that it has “struck a deal in principle” with Amazon to develop its intellectual property.

It has been announced that the project will begin with the development of the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

Cavill has shown his interest for Warhammer, a fantasy war game in which you paint complex tiny miniatures and combat them.

The British actor said in a statement on Friday: “I’ve loved Warhammer since I was a kid, so this is a genuinely meaningful moment for me. The privilege to shepherd this cinematic universe from its beginnings is both an honour and a burden.”

Another iconic tabletop gaming franchise, Dungeons & Dragons, will have its own film next year starring Chris Pine.

The Warhammer partnership is still to be officially finalised and a further announcement will be made “in due course”, the Nottingham-based games company added.
